At least eight people have been killed in a plane crash near the southern Minnesota town of Owatonna, the Associated Press and local media reported Thursday morning.

One person, who had been listed in critical condition as of 11:40 a.m. in the Owatonna hospital has died from injuries sustained in the accident, the Associated Press reported just before 3:00 p.m. that afternoon. At least one person is unaccounted for while investigator determine whether the person boarded the plane in New Jersey, according to the Steele County Sheriff’s Office.

Star Tribune reported that charter flight 81, a Raytheon BAE 125-800A commercial jet, had not landed properly on the 5,500 foot runway at Owatonna Degner Regional Airport just after 9:30 a.m local time en route from Atlantic City, New Jersey. The plane either tried to take off or could not stop in time.

The plane was owned by East Coast Jets Inc. of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Aviation Research Group told the Star Tribune that East Coast Jets operates 11 aircraft — Hawker and Lear jets — and employs 21 pilots.

“They have a good safety history,” ARG President Joe Moeggenberg told the Star Tribune, based on federal data. “There were no recent incidents.”

This model of aircraft “has a very good safety record; been around along time,” said Gary Robb, aviation expert and attorney with a Kansas City law firm that represents aviation crash victims.

Gary Robb, an aviation expert and attorney told the Star Tribune that the aircraft “has a very good safety record [and has] been around along time.”

According to the Star Tribune, the pilots have been identified as Clark Keefer of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Dan D’Ambrosio of Hellertown, Pennsylvania. Pilot error has not been identified as a cause for the crash, but investigators caution it is to early for any conclusions to be made.

Graphics released by the Star Tribune show that the plane ended up past the runway it was attempting to land on. The Associated Press reports that debris was scattered 500 feet beyond the runway.

The bodies have been taken to Rochester for examination, while the plane’s data recorders have been flown to Washington, DC.

Both WCCO-TV and the Star Tribune report that the time of the crash coincided with a line of storms moving through the area, though what effect, if any the storm had, is under investigation. Witnesses told the Star Tribune that the worst of the storm had gone at the time of the crash and only light wind and rain remained. The Associated Press confirms from the National Weather Service that “the storms were subsiding at the time of the crash.”

Owatonna resident John Billingsly, a retired pilot who worked at the airport for many years, told the Star Tribune, “I saw the plane making its final approach, and it appeared nothing was wrong. We’d just had a lot of wind, but it had calmed down a bit and mostly subsided by that time.”

The plane, a charter for Viracon, Inc. of Owatonna, was flying customers from “a couple of different companies” to discuss a $2 billion dollar casino and hotel project in Las Vegas, Nevada that Revel Entertainment is building. Atlantic City Mayor Scott Evans told the Associated Press that two high-level employees for Revel and an employee of Tishman Construction. Viracon is an architectural glass fabricator and Tishman is assisting Revel.

As of 5:00 a.m Friday, five of the victims, including the two pilots, have been identified by the Associated press.

APG International, a company specializing in glass facades, lost two executives: Marc Rosenberg, the chief operating officer, and Alan Barnett, an assistant project manager, according to the Glassboro, N.J. company’s spokeswoman Amelia Townsend.

The Tishman empoyee, the only victim identified, was project manager Karen Sandland, 44, based in Newark, New Jersey company spokesman Bud Perrone told the Associated Press.

The Revel employee’s idenities were released by the Star Tribune Friday, they are: Tony Craig, 50, of Brigantine, N.J., vice president of construction development; Chris Daul, 44, of Northfield, N.J., vice president of construction development; and Lawrence (Chip) Merrigan, 62, of Absecon N.J., director of field operations.

The crash is the deadliest in Minnesota since October 2002, when Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone and seven others died after their chartered twin-engine plane crashed in the woods near Eveleth, in Northern Minnesota, according to the Star Tribune.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an independent agency responsible for investigation of accidents involving aviation, highway, marine, pipelines and railroads in the United States (except aircraft of the armed forces and the intelligence agencies), will be investigating the crash.

The NTSB reported Friday through the Star Tribute that the agency has 14 investigators working on the crash, with assistance from the FBI.

The NTSB reports two other fatal accidents since 1962 at Owatonna airport. A crash in 1992 killed one and injured another and a crash in 2004 killed four people.

Leaked correspondence between Tesla, Inc. boss Elon Musk and members of his executive team sent on Tuesday but published on Wednesday reveal his insistence that employees maintain an in-office presence for 40 hours per week “or depart Tesla.”

One email first published by Electrek and corroborated by Reuters with the subject line “Remote work is no longer [acceptable]” read in part: “Anyone who wishes to do remote work must be in the office for a minimum (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. This is less than we ask of factory workers.”

A second email reiterated: “Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week. Moreover, the office must be where your actual colleagues are located, not some remote pseudo office. If you don’t show up, we will assume you have resigned.”

Though Electrek writes rolling back Covid-19 work-from-home policies is being considered by “every other company,” Reuters reports major Silicon Valley, California companies do not require a full-time return to the office. Google announced a “hybrid working approach,” where employees work in office three days per week but remain at home for two, effective since April.

In the second email, Musk justified his position: “There are of course companies that don’t require this, but when was the last time they shipped a great new product? It’s been a while […] Tesla has and will create and actually manufacture the most exciting and meaningful products of any company on Earth. This will not happen by phoning it in.”

He added his own experience having “lived in the factory so much” while production at his Fremont facility slowed between 2017-18. “If I had not done that, Tesla would long ago have gone bankrupt,” he wrote.

Workers’ health group Worksafe’s executive director, Stephen Knight wrote to Reuters that, although employers “…are finding that mandating a return of all employees is a recipe for outbreaks,” adding “Tesla’s disregard for worker safety is well documented, including their flouting of the county public health department at the start of the pandemic.”

In May 2020, Musk reopened a factory in Fremont despite local guidance, and the facility reported 440 coronavirus cases in the following seven months. Musk recently praised Chinese workers for “burning the 3 am oil,” whilst Americans try “to avoid going to work at all.”

A January Pew Research Center survey published February 16 found 61% of US adults currently working from home are doing so out of choice, and 77% reported teleworking at least some of the time.

In a tweet dated March 3, Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal wrote: “Wherever you feel most productive and creative is where you will work and that includes working from home full-time forever. Office every day? That works too. Some days in office, some days from home? Of course.”

On May 13, Musk suspended a USD44 billion deal to acquire Twitter, citing a May 2 Reuters article that included an estimate of the percent of active users that were fake or spam accounts. CNN Business said Musk’s reasoning to do so was unclear.

An electrician is an electrical contractor that you hire for remodeling jobs or new construction. These professionals can be licensed or not. Many homeowners wonder if it’s really necessary to hire the fully licensed company or individual when there are cheaper ways to get the jobs done.Electricians run new wires or replace old ones. They handle electrical boxes, fuses, conduit and circuits. They follow blueprints and plans designed by electrical engineers in order to create working systems within a home or commercial building. Some handymen and jacks-of-all-trades claim to be able to fix your wiring, but buyer beware: electric installations or repairs are complicated endeavors that demand respect from DIYers. Faulty wiring can be disastrous. Here are some pros and cons for hiring a licensed vs. unlicensed individual or business.Pros of Hiring a Licensed Electrician:- Licensed pros have had to do coursework in order to learn the ins and outs of electricity. Not only did they have to study and pass tests, they also had to spend time working out in the field acquiring hands-on experience.- A homeowner can check with the local board of electrical contractors in order to learn about a pro’s past history. Is his or her license up to date? Have there been any unresolved complaints about them? These are important items to check into.- Building codes are set up to ensure public safety, and licensed contractors will stay up to date with them. When electrical work is done, the local municipalities will inspect it to make sure it’s done correctly.- In order to go through the steps to get their license, these individuals had to be dedicated to their craft and in refining their skill set. This dedication will shine through in the degree to which you can trust their work.Pros of Hiring an Unlicensed Electrician:- An unlicensed person’s fees will be less expensive than one licensed. If you “know a guy” who can do the work you need done, and if it’s not a huge task, you might be able to save some money here.- Since an unlicensed worker won’t usually bother with permits and inspections, the job will be completed faster, which is cool if you’re trying to finish the work in a hurry.Cons of a Licensed Professional:- It will cost more cash to hire a professional, but it’s important to remember that you often get what you pay for.- A homeowner will have to get permits and wait for inspectors. Still, the homeowner will be assured that when all is done, the job has been done right.Cons of an Unlicensed Handyman:- Crossed wires can short out and burn your house down. Worse yet, if the insurance company learns that a non-professional performed the work, they may not pay for the damage caused by the fire.- Because the handyman isn’t being watched over by municipalities, inspectors or the board of contractors, if something goes wrong, there’s no recourse. When building a new house or remodeling, there are many decisions to be made. Deciding between hiring an unlicensed or licensed electrician is one of them. After weighing the facts, a homeowner will have to make a decision for him or herself.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and Canada National Railway (CN) have worked out a tentative agreement, avoiding a walkout scheduled for midnight on the 26th by 604 workers.

The previous contract expired 31 December 2003, and the union notified CN of their intent to strike 23 March. The IBEW members covered under the contract maintain the track signals, and radio and data networks which monitor the movement of trains.

Federal mediators helped facilitate the agreement, invited by both the union and company. Montreal-based CN announced the four-year deal via a Business-wire release, but withheld the terms of the agreement pending a ratification vote, but did say the agreement is retroactive to 1 January 2004.

CN resumed talks earlier in March with 1,750 engineers after the union and company agreed possible work stoppages would be after 12 May 2005. Track maintenance workers signed a 4-year contract deal with CN in February, as well as a tentative settlement with conductors, yard service employees and traffic co-ordinators. In 2004 a 28-day strike by 5,000 clerical and cargo terminal workers cost the company an estimate CA$24 million.

When you have declared bankruptcy in your business, your credit score will be greatly affected. Your score will definitely go down and you will suffer a lot of consequences. You can no longer charge or purchase items using your credit card. In addition, you may be required to pay for higher interest rates. Luckily, there are a lot of steps on how to improve credit score after bankruptcy. Fixing or increasing your credit score after going to this kind of situation would take some time. If you focus on improving your credit score, you can get good results within a year up to 18 months.

Open a charge account at a retailer store that sells appliances or pieces of furniture. This is because the big retailer stores would be more willing to give you credit after knowing that you declared bankruptcy. You might get a soaring amount of interest rate. However, the value of the product that you are going to get will also boost your credit score. Once you buy the item from that store, make sure to pay half of the total sales price. This is important because putting down a large down payment will make it easier for you to pay the whole lot. In addition to this, if you pay half of the total price, you will not have an interest which is too high for you to handle.

After that, open a secured credit card account and convert it to an unsecured account after a certain period of time. If you are paying your balances on time, the conversion can be made from 6 months to 1 year. Take note that converting a secured account to an unsecured one will mean a high interest rate. However, having a regular account will also improve your credit score so it’s worth it. In addition, you will also improve your credit score by opening and paying for additional accounts at the right time.

Make sure that you are able to pay your bills on or before its due date. You should pay for your newly opened accounts and other assets that you have kept after bankruptcy. Your assets include a car loan or a mortgage that are still running. Paying your bills on time will show that you are able to manage your finances. Once the lenders see that you are working hard and are managing your finances well, they might become your good prospects.

Lastly, always keep an eye on your credit report. This report contains all the necessary information regarding your finances including transactions, loans, payments and others. You may want to order a copy of your credit report from one or all of the credit bureaus. This is important so that you can see whether or not errors are present. Once you see an error or anything that you do not recognize, contact the credit bureau immediately and ask for a clarification. You can also ask for a correction if you believe that one or more data in the report are erroneous.

Buffalo, New York —A proposed hotel that was supposed to be built at the corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York is apparently off the table. The former proposal was going to be called The Elmwood Village Hotel and would have consisted of 72 rooms and cost between $7 to $10 million American dollars to build.

Today several unknown individuals were seen removing a sign that was dedicated to the “Elmwood Village Gateway,” which signifies the beginning of the Elmwood Village at the formerly proposed project’s location.

Nearly an hour later the men replaced the sign with a different and unexpected sign: “For Sale: 5 commercial parcels and 1 carriage house, By: Owner.” Those 5 “parcels” are 1109-1121 Elmwood and 999 Forest Avenue, which is located in an illegal alley, according to the City of Buffalo, behind the 5 other properties on Elmwood. Hans Mobius owns all properties named in the sale.

Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Companies never owned the properties and has repeatadly told Wikinews in exclusive interviews that he still had a “contract to buy the properties” and on October 2, 2006 told Wikinews in an exclusive interview that he “extended” the “agreement to purchase the property[s] and will have it under contract for what we hope is a sufficient period of time.”

“He [Mobius] is undoubtedly concerned because he has lost some tenants and is a bit impatient. I think he has properly portrayed the situation,” said Savarino in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

Savarino also says that there may be “legal issues” to work out now, before anything else can move forward, regarding the proposal.

“There are some legal complexities that must be sorted out before anything can happen there,” added Savarino.

The welcome sign was; however, not removed entirely. The sign was placed, facing the same direction of north, on the side of the Forest Plaza Art Gallery, a new art gallery located on the corner of Forest and Elmwood.

Nancy Pollina, owner of Don Apparel which was located at 1109 Elmwood, but closed on October 14, 2006 considers this a possible “victory” in regards to the lawsuit filed against the hotel to stop it from being built, alleging that several laws were broken, including not performing an Environmental Impact Study before the proposal was approved by the city, during its approval and the proposal was “rushed.” Patricia Morris, who operates Don Apparel with Pollina, Angeline Genovese and Evelyn Bencinich, owners of residences on Granger Place which abut the rear of the proposed site, Nina Freudenheim, a resident of nearby Penhurst Park, and Sandra Girage, the owner of a two-family residence on Forest Avenue less than a hundred feet from the proposed hotel’s sole entrance and exit driveway, were also plaintiffs in the lawsuit. They filed the suit with a lawyer representing them, Arthur J. Giacalone, on April 25, 2006 in New York State Supreme Court, but the case has never gone to a courtroom.

Giacalone believes that a press release issued in July regarding the project was nothing but a statement to “save face,” but that the placement of the for sale sign might be a way of convincing Savarino to speed up the sale of the properties.

“I thought all along that Savarino’s July press release might be no more than an effort to save face. But we have no way of knowing. Similarly, Mobius might have put the for-sale sign up in an attempt to pressure Savarino into closing the deal. There’s no way to tell,” said Giacalone in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

In regards to the lawsuit, Giacalone thinks it may now be in “limbo.”

“The lawsuit still sits in limbo,” added Giacalone.

On Thursday, Charles Lazarus, the founder of United States toy retailer Toys “R” Us, died in Manhattan, New York, New York of respiratory failure. He was 94. His death came a week after Toys “R” Us announced that all of the stores were closing.

Toys “R” Us issued a statement in which they said, “There have been many sad moments for Toys “R” Us in recent weeks, and none more heartbreaking than today’s news about the passing of our beloved founder, Charles Lazarus. He visited us in New Jersey just last year and we will forever be grateful for his positive energy, passion for the customer and love for children everywhere. Our thoughts and prayers are with Charles’ family and loved ones.”

Michael Goldstein, who was a close friend and former Toys “R” Us chairman, said: “He was the father of the toy business. He knew the toys and loved the toys and loved the kids who would shop in the stores. His face lit up when he watched kids playing with toys.” In a phone interview Goldstein said that Charles Lazarus died in Manhattan.

Lazarus no longer held a stake in the chain, CNN reported. Lazarus took over his father’s bicycle repair shop in 1948 at the age of 25 and changed it to baby furniture. He opened the first Toys “R” Us store in 1957. Lazarus had remained its CEO until 1994.

Online money transfer company PayPal is reportedly blocking over $20,000 in donations from the website Something Awful, donations intended for the American Red Cross hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Rich Kyanka, founder of Something Awful, reports that the account he set up for Red Cross donations has been suspended by the eBay-owned subsidiary due to “suspicious behavior”.

According to Kyanka, PayPal is requesting “proof of delivery”, even though there is no item being purchased and the account was set up to accept donations. The account remains frozen. Kyanka is attempting to solve the problem by faxing various documents to PayPal in order to prove the legitimacy of the drive.

According to recent updates posted on the Something Awful website, Kyanka was requesting that refunds were issued for all donations that were sent. According to Kyanka, the account was frozen because PayPal has no link with the Red Cross.

A solution proposed by PayPal was to have all donations go to the United Way. While initially accepting offer, Kyanka reconsidered when Something Awful readers objected to having their donation sent to the United Way — partly due to the organizations troubled past. Instead of the PayPal donation setup, Kyanka has requested that readers send any donations directly to the Red Cross.

Something Awful, despite being a humor website, has a history of running donation drives for certain causes, including purchasing ballistic chest plates and body armor for a platoon in the US Army’s 25th Infantry Division during the 2003 Iraq War. The Something Awful webservers are located in New Orleans where Hurricane Katrina hit.

An Iowa district court judge has ruled that a 1998 decision banning same-sex marriages in that state is “unconstitutional” and that the ban “violated the rights of due process and equal protection” of people in same-sex relationships said Judge Robert Hanson.

The ruling came when six homosexual couples filed a lawsuit against Polk County, Iowa for not allowing same-sex marriages saying that the ban violated homosexual couples’ constitutional rights.

“[This is] a significant step forward in recognizing the constitutional rights of all Iowans. And it’s an amazing day for same-sex couples and their families all across Iowa,” said a lawyer for the couples who filed the lawsuit, Dennis Johnson.

All six couples received a license to marry as soon as the ruling was made, but John Sarcone, the Polk County District Attorney says that he plans to appeal the ruling. For now, Sarcone has asked that Hanson to put a stay on the ruling and to not allow any same-sex marriage licenses to be issued until an appeal could be made. A decision on whether a stay should be granted is expected next week.

Iowa’s governor, Chet Culver has also spoken out against the ruling saying that “while some Iowans may disagree on this issue, I personally believe marriage is between a man and a woman.

For now, same-sex couples can apply for a marriage license for only US$5.00 and a waiver is available for couple who wish to apply to have their marriage license issued immediately instead of the normal three day waiting period.

Massachusetts is currently the only other state in the U.S. to allow same-sex marriages. 11 other states allow civil unions or domestic partnerships.
