The long-lost tomb of Marcus Nonius Macrinus, the inspiration of the character Maximus Decimus Meridius in Ridley Scott‘s popular film ‘Gladiator‘, was discovered off the ancient Via Flaminia road in Rome this Thursday.

Pieces of the tomb first began to emerge from the ground during construction for a residential complex along the Tiber River’s banks.

The archaeological finding was “the most important ancient Roman monument to come to light for 20 or 30 years”, said Daniela Rossi, who was a top member of the effort in finding the tomb. The Superintendent of Archaeology in Rome, Angelo Bottini, described the tomb as “a monument of great beauty”.

Cristiano Ranieri led the effort along with other archaeologists, who are still working hard to fully uncover the site. The team hopes to find the sarcophagus of the ancient hero among the sprawling tomb.

Marble columns fifteen meters wide, inscriptions, decorations, writings and other priceless treasures have been preserved thanks to an ancient flood from the Tiber River.

The massive tomb details the life of the ancient gladiator through ten inscriptions, whose history differed greatly from the movie’s version. The two had only shared being close friends and generals of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. The historical version of the character had lived on to become wealthy and famous, while the character played by Russell Crowe had a tragic ending.

Plans are underway to turn the area into the Via Flaminia Archaeological Park, with the tomb as the central attraction.

Use of 3D Printing Technology in Dental Industry

by

Stuart Ting

In a world where technology has taken a tremendous leap and advantage in every field, you would always look forward to what will it develop in the coming years. Todays generation only wants to work with the latest technology and gadgets as they help them save time and make them learn new ways of doing the same old things. Even the youngest of the kids know how to work complicated technologies and they all want to be well-equipped by gadgets which support these technologies. The world of 3D printing is taking over the dentist industry by a storm and is looking to accommodate and reduce the work of doctors by providing easier solutions.

Current Applications of 3D Printing in Dental Industry

3D printing in the dental industry has helped the doctors in many ways. They are able to make modules on the spot to examine their own designs and make changes quickly. It is becoming easier for them to show their patients the amount of work that would be required for their dental hygiene. In Melbourne, doctors have been using 3D printing to teach their students on a more practical basis by using 3D printed models. This is helping the students to understand the practice and procedures better and faster. The doctors have used it to make the models for the following practices:

– Bridges and crown models

– Braces and retainers

– Night guards

– Orthodontic appliances

– Surgical drill guides, and much more

3D printing helps to develop the digital files in solid objects so that their designers can get an up-close and personal look which would help them in developing their work in a better fashion. There are many companies in Melbourne that offer 3D printing services as they have all the latest technology and have professionals who are fluent in using this kind of a printer. Therefore, the dentists in this area are able to take the advantage of 3D printing and are using them to create models which are more accurate and are helping them save time and effort.

Use of 3D Printers by Dentists

Since a 3D printer lets you carry out your printing needs to convert a design to a solid form, the have helped many dentists as many of them are purchasing them to keep it in their offices. There are many companies in Melbourne which has the technology to carry out 3D prints at a reasonable cost for their clients and provide them with the best quality of prints. This has also helped the dentists in many ways. They are able to create very accurate designs and models to replicate their old models and make them better. It has helped them to be consistent in their practices and make their patients understand the problem in a better manner. It has also helped them reduce labour cost and time as the 3D printer has made their work faster and cheaper. They are also able to carry out more research and development in the dental industry and come up with better and faster ways for surgery or for solving day to day dental problems. It allows the dentists to ponder upon the innovation which is possible in their fields and make changes in the design which can be printed many times before they decide on the final model.

In the dental industry, the 3D printing technology has helped the doctors in developing the mould and models faster and with efficiency. Earlier, it used to take them a long time to make the models and implants, but now, with the help of 3D printing, they can have their designers printed in the solid form in no time.

Conclusion

This market is quite niche in the dental industry and will take time to make its way. Some dentists who are already using this technology find that their work has been reduced drastically and they are able to achieve accurate moulds using the 3D printing and designing them on the computer.

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation yesterday released 600 pages of the 2,000 page final report into the Jokela school shooting. 18-year-old Pekka-Eric Auvinen opened fire at Jokela High School, killing eight before turning his gun on himself, receiving fatal wounds.

The remaining 1,400 pages of the report are to remain confidential. The public section reveals a number of problems that may have impacted on Auvinen’s decision to conduct the attack, but says that police failed to find any conclusive motive. Also released was an animation depicting events at the school.

The report says Auvinen had been bullied since the age of ten and concludes the extent of this problem was greater than previously thought. Auvinen suffered from anxiety and blushing, especially in lessons, and had been diagnosed with a panic disorder, for which he had been prescribed medication. Auvinen also suffered from sleep disorders and loneliness, and had few friends, although one former bully did go on to become a good friend of Auvinen’s. His mother said inability to settle on a suitable ideology contributed to Auvinen’s depression.

His parents had noticed and reacted to the bullying problem, but their intervention only served to worsen the situation. According to entries in Auvinen’s diary, he first began planning the shooting – which he gave the English name “Operation Main Strike” – about eight months prior to actually conducting the shooting.

Auvinen had told his mother that under certain circumstances he could approve of violence. He had often viewed web sites promoting violence and had a number of online contacts whom he discussed his ideas with. One of these was a United States teen arrested for planning a similar attack, and two others discussed the Columbine High School Massacre with him and traded videos they found online. However, there is no evidence he informed anyone of his plans until immediately prior to the attack.

The report called Auvinen a moderately good student, but noted his mental problems had impacted his performance at school. He had been interested in politics from an early age, being involved with the Centre Party, the Social Democratic Party, the Left Alliance, and the Finnish Communist Party.

“In the best case, this (attack) would create massive destruction and chaos, or even a revolution,” read one diary entry. “In any case, I want this to be remembered forever. Maybe I’ll even have a follower; after all, I am a super-person, almost God.” Another revealed he intended to “kill as many of you bastards as possible”. His diary also reveals he was aware he would be dead by the end of the attack.

He obtained a .22 calliber handgun which he named Catherine, having been denied a license for a 9mm gun, and submitted his plans online – including to YouTube – just 14 minutes prior to firing his first shots, having cycled to school. It was determined that, given the time-frame, there was little that could have been done by anyone who saw the material to prevent the attack. He fired 75 shots, 50 of which struck his eight fatally wounded victims, who were apparently chosen at random. Thirteen others were injured in the event.

The deceased were six students, the school headmistress and the school nurse. Auvinen shot at each several times in the region of the head and upper torso. He ultimately shot himself in the school toilet, and died in hospital from head wounds ten hours later, having never regained consciousness.

Police could not determine why he chose the date he did, although it was noted his online relationship with a foreign girl had ended just days before. It was also determined little could be done to predict and prevent future incidents, although one measure being sought is to require medical checks for gun licences and parental consent for prospective owners under 18.

The confidential section of the report discusses causes of death and police operations.

With so many people these days investing more and more time and money on their homes and gardens, it is hard to make your own home unique. After all, we live in a society that is literally obsessed with home decorating and gardening. It seems impossible to make our garden stand out from the rest!

If you want to add that extra something to your garden to make it truly individual why not install a garden fountain? There is no doubt about it, having a beautiful water feature in your garden, such as a fountain or waterfall, can add that special touch to your landscaping job. Not only will it look wonderful, there truly is nothing lovelier than the gentle tinkling of a water fountain.

There are literally thousands of garden water fountains to choose from, ranging from the traditional to the more unusual. They come in all manner of materials, from bronze, other metals, cast concrete, fiberglass and slate to name a few. Indeed, in addition to the vast number of pre-fabricated water fountains on the market, you can even custom design your own!

Deciding upon the right water fountain for you will depend on your personal likes and dislikes, the style of your home and garden, as well as the space you have available. The best water fountains are those that do not overcrowd a yard, so make sure your water fountain is a workable and realistic size for your yard. Whether you choose to install the fountain in the center of your garden, or discreetly tuck it into a garden bed or against a wall, the fountain should complement the landscape, not dominate it.

Even if you are on a tight budget, you can still enjoy the wonders of a water garden fountain because it is quite simple to install them yourself. In fact, by simply visiting your home-hardware store, you can easily purchase what you need to construct your own water feature without spending hundreds of dollars.

Whether you have professionals install it, or ‘do-it-yourself’ you will be amazed at how much a garden fountain can add to your landscape. In fact, the only limits to making your water fountain ‘the icing on the cake’ of your house and garden is your imagination!

A Chinese government official convicted of working for the Taiwanese government has been executed, and thousands of civil workers viewed the taped trial for “educational purposes” on Monday. The prisoner’s name was Tong Daning and was in his mid-50’s and held a rank just under “Assistant-Minister” before he was found guilty of espionage. According to the anonymous sources, Daning had been selling state sources for over 15 years, making a profit of about US$250,000.

Daning is the highest ranking person executed in China since 1999, when a Major General and Senior Colonel were executed for selling state secrets. China and Taiwan have been spying on each other ever since 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was officially created, but that has not stopped over 1 million Taiwanese citizens from working and investing over 100 billion USD in China. There have been many cases of espionage within the last few years, with all but two resulting in a death sentence.

A view of the Leonard Zakim bridge from the construction site. The warehouses at right will be replaced by a five-acre park within two years. The elevated roadway in the foreground is the John F. Gilmore Bridge.

Wednesday, March 23, 2005

Cambridge, Massachusetts —Construction of two condominium buildings and a five-acre park began on March 21, in East Cambridge, Massachusetts. The buildings and park are part of the 45-acre Northpoint development, which will take 15 years and more than $2bn to complete, according to the Boston Globe. The buildings, designated as “Building S” and “Building T” by the planners of the project, Spaulding & Slye Colliers, have been designed by local architectural firm Childs Bertman Tseckares and Architects Alliance from Toronto. Buildings S and T are the first of an eventual 20 buildings planned at the site.

The development will fill what used to be a railroad yard for the Guilford Rail System, a subsidiary of Guilford Transportation Industries. According to Hoovers.com, Guilford is controlled by Timothy Mellon, heir to the Mellon banking fortune. Guilford Rail Systems has its headquarters in North Billerica and owns 1600 miles of railroad throughout New England. The tracks in the Northpoint plot have been removed, though Boston subway’s Lechmere station remains within walking distance of the site, along with parts of Boston and Cambridge. The site is bordered by Route 93 on its eastern side, Monsignor O’Brien Highway to the west, and the Gilmore Bridge to the south.

The landscape architecture of the park is provided by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, a landscape architecture firm on Concord Avenue in Cambridge. The firm’s principal teaches in Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. MVVA is also completing the landscape for Harvard’s Northwest Science Building.
