In late August, the Canadian city of Toronto celebrated the quarter century anniversary of Fan Expo Canada, a massive annual pop culture convention. Running from August 22 to 25, the event featured extensive retail areas, panels, celebrity appearances, an artist alley, and attendees in cosplay. Wikinews attended.

At the panel “Breaking Into Comics,” speakers shared their insights into getting started as a comic artist or writer. Comic artist Jenn St-Onge (Nancy Drew, Jem and the Misfits) told of being forced to re-evaluate her life, after growing up with ample positive reinforcement about being an artist. “In my first stint, I didn’t get any work. […] to come back and get that kind of second chance, eight years ago, it feels really good to have people coming to you and being ‘I want you to work,’ and basically working seven days a week for the last eight years.”

“You have to work those seven days to earn a weekend,” quipped Valiant Entertainment editor Heather Antos, later in the panel. While all agreed that time off was rare as a freelancer, artist Leisha Riddell emphasized the need for boundaries, saying “this weekend, I’m becoming part of the couch and playing video games until my eyes go blurry.”

Actress Denise Crosby is set to appear in the final season of Suits, a Toronto-shot legal series. The actress recalled her season with Star Trek: The Next Generation, when they were the “scrappy little red headed stepchild of the [Paramount] lot.”

Underwhelmed with her role, she left the series toward the end of its first season. “This is not what I wanted to become an actor for. I didn’t want to stand on the bridge and just go ‘aye aye captain,’ you know, and not even move. I actually asked them to make up some fake legs” to place at the character Tasha Yar’s bridge station, which was on a risen platform. “You could just stick my legs, just fake legs, and I had no lines[….] You gotta know that Tasha’s on her command post, but just put the legs there, just keep the camera low.”

Actor Brendan Fraser’s appearance at the convention was directly from filming The Professionals in South Africa. He quipped “I still have dust in my shoes.”

The cast of the sitcom Kim’s Convenience had a panel in a room for 700 people. The popular series is based on a 2011 stage play about a Korean-Canadian family that operates a convenience store. Simu Liu, one of the series leads, is to play the titular character in Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021).

Lead Paul Sun-Hyung Lee talked about how the series has been underestimated “up ’til now.” During the premiere, “I felt like Cinderella at the ball […] I’m a jobber, I’ve been working as an actor for like, close to 25 years, lots of small roles. Expositionary characters, never asked to carry anything, to be a lead, to actually have a background story. And so to finally be able to do an entire season of television as one of the lead actors was tremendous”.

Hasbro hosted a panel about their Star Wars products, which promoted their new action figures and helmets. The company’s upcoming replica helmet is of Luke Skywalker’s X-wing helmet, their “number one requested hero helmet […] This by far is the most labor-intensive helmet to date.” While previous helmets have included movie sound, this product includes lights to simulate the enemy ships going past your head.

Asked about sustainability, the company noted that recently they had switched to a bio-based PET for their packaging, “which was more plant-based plastic for greater environmental concerns. […] This week, Hasbro announced that we’re […] looking to switch away from plastic altogether, in terms of our packaging […] we’re very much aware that a lot of times times plastic is […] ripped off and discarded, so we’re constantly trying to improve on that as a company to improve our environmental footprint.”

The event played host to the Rocket League WGN North American Championship, with the winning team receiving C$10,000 and a trip to a professional circuit event.

On March 26, thousands rallied outside the Columbus, Ohio statehouse, advocating rights for undocumented immigrants. This was one of a series of rallies following one in Los Angeles, which was reported to have drawn over 500,000 attendees.

The sponsoring coalition included the Immigrant Worker Project, the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), UFCW Local 880, MIGUATE (of [Dover, Ohio]), and the Red [network] de Inmigrantes de Ohio. Organizers wanted to raise awareness of bill pending in the US Senate, HR 4437, which would make it a felony to be an illegal alien, or to assist aliens in entering or staying the country illegally. Organizers also called for “true” immigration reform plan that would provide a path to citizenship for all immigrant workers.

Have you discovered that you keep getting flu-like symptoms even when it appears as though the flu is not going around in your community? Do your sinus, allergy or cold symptoms seem to be immune to treatments? If you answer yes, then you might be experiencing toxic mold symptoms instead of the viral or bacterial illness you thought you had.

Toxic mold symptoms can be compared to as a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Symptoms appear benign but can actually be a sign of a serious problem to your health. Toxic mold symptoms are often misdiagnosed by doctors because they’re unaware that you have been exposed to toxic mold. Few people experience toxic mold symptoms unless they have a mold infestation in their homes.

Seaching for the Truth

The majority of people who begin to experience toxic mold symptoms find themselves unsure about if they have mold in their homes. Just because you haven’t seen any, does not necessarily mean you don’t have a problem. To find out if you have a mold problem, you can ask and answer the following few questions.

– Do you have an earthy or musty smell anywhere in your home? The odor doesn’t need to be strong. Just a hint of the smell could be an indication of a mold outbreak.

– Do you get eye irritation, a stuffy nose, scratchy throat, dizziness, nausea or headaches when you visit certain rooms in your home?

If you answered yes to these two questions, then you probably have mold in your home. Next you need to check the level of humidity in your home. Mold likes moisture. Check your home’s ventilation as well to make sure it’s efficiently removing or circulating the air.

Treating Toxic Mold Symptoms

The best treatment for toxic mold symptoms is to completely remove the mold from your home permanently. Consider hiring a professional mold inspection company to examine your home and identify areas where mold growth is prevalent. This is the best option if you believe you have mold growth, but can’t see any. Mold can easily grow behind walls and above ceiling out of sight.

Toxic mold symptoms, if they’re not too severe, can be treated with over-the-counter headache pain relievers, nasal sprays and allergy medications. Medications for sinus problems work well too. If necessary, some doctors may prescribe anit-fungal medications that can help lessen the severity of toxic mold symptoms.

Don’t ignore the minor toxic mold symptoms. If unchecked, they could grow into something worse. Severe toxic mold symptoms inlcude memory loss, depression, mild dementia, bleeding lungs and hearing loss. Some to these toxic mold symptoms are extreme, but still a possibility that those who live in homes untreated for mold cannot ignore.

To further protect yourself and your family from toxic mold symptoms, consider purchasing an air filter to clean the indoor air. Do this only after the mold has been treated successfully. A HEPA air filter will collect dead mold spores which cause the minor and serious health problems mentioned earlier.

The initial season of Kansas deer hunting began 55 years ago in 1965 and it has grown in several ways. Earlier years of Kansas deer hunting were a frustrating period for a lot of sportsman. As a consequence of size of the Kansas deer herd, Kansas deer sportsman had two significant obstacles. 1st, they had to get fortunate enough to draw a deer tag with the state’s lotto system. 2nd, they had to identify a spot to hunt that might in fact have a deer or two living on it. Not only were those two road blocks in the way of a prosperous kansas deer hunt, but you also had to be a Kansas citizen to be able to hunt in the state.

Kansas deer hunting has changed considerably since those early seasons. It is not the same as it used to be. A Kansas resident is now able to buy approximately 6 deer tags within a season as a result of the productive efforts of the Kansas Department of Wildlife supervision of deer population during the last forty years. Nevertheless, just one of those deer can be an antlered buck, the other 5 are merely to help keep the population in check. Out of state hunters who would like to experience Kansas deer hunting are currently accepted in the state as well. Out of state hunters have to make an application and also have their own name drawn for a tag, even so, their likelihood of getting a tag are extremely excellent as many areas of the state possess permits leftover from the lottery.

No longer is it a major struggle to locate a destination to go Kansas deer hunting. The deer population is so excellent that most hunting places have got more than three to four on them at a time. Hunters have joked about how there is not 1 parcel in Kansas with no deer inhabiting it. An upswing of the Kansas deer population has also resulted in a huge boost in the recognition of Kansas deer hunting. More deer means additional hunters and additional hunters equals much more competition for a superior hunting spot. As a result of safe practices, the majority of Kansas property owners established limitations about how many hunters can hunt each year.

You will find a lot of hunters who have made Kansas deer hunting as an annual custom. It is a great time to see relatives and close friends to come together and do something even the generations prior to them loved to do. The kids who hunted that 1st Kansas deer season are now taking their grandkids deer hunting and relating tales from over 40 years of time spent in deer camps. The younger hunters are now being filled up with excitement regarding their next Kansas deer hunting experience.

I highly recommend Kansas deer hunting to anyone who is looking to have an amazing time with family and friends. It’s such a rush to finally peg that first trophy buck. You will create memories for a life time.

According to Médecins Sans Frontières the health care system in Sierra Leone causes loss of life because the poor cannot afford medical treatment. The maternal death rate and the child mortality rate in Sierra Leone are the highest in the world.Experiences of Médecins Sans Frontières had shown that free care or low fees lead to a dramatic increase in the number of patients.Nonetheless the national health system of Sierra Leone demands payment for all treatment with simple consultations costing as much as 25 days of income.According to Action Against Hunger the number of children with acute malnutrition has reached almost twice the level of the WHO‘s emergency threshold of 2% in the Moyamba district of Sierra Leone.

The Los Angeles Times writes that Sierra Leone, in spite of decades of foreign aid, has not yet increased the standard of living of its people considerably and 60% of the public spending of Sierra Leone come from other governments and nonprofit organizations.Since 2002 the country received $1 billion in aid but the infant mortality rate is almost the highest in the world, lower than Angola but higher than Afghanistan. The newspaper further reports that the United Nations state that 1 in 8 Sierra Leonean women die giving birth, as compared to 1 in 4,800 in the United States and that life expectancy in Sierra Leone is merely 41 years while in Bangladesh life expectancy reaches 60 years.

The government of Sierra Leone had expressed its intend to abolish user fees for women and children with a new plan for a fairer health care system that was to be revealed on the Sierra Leone Investment and Donor Conference, which was held in London on November 18 and 19.

“The Sierra Leone government has publicly stated its commitment to abolish user fees, and the UK government and other donors have promised to help,” said Seco Gerard, advisor at Médecins Sans Frontières’s analysis and advocacy unit. “What is crucial now is that Sierra Leone actually receives the necessary funding and technical assistance to realise this objective. It is time that words are being followed up by concrete action. If not, people who could otherwise be saved will continue to die needlessly every day.”

The Telegraph reports that president Bai Koroma was also hoping to secure a significant increase in aid donations with his new health plan. While Germany declined to support president Bai Koroma’s “Agenda for Change” and urged to give more consideration to women’s welfare the country received support from the European Union, DFID, UNIPSIL, World Bank, IFAD and the African Development Bank. From the pledges of $850 million the government of Sierra Leone was hoping for only about $300 millions could be secured, with attached conditionalities concerning the use of funding.

In a presentation at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in Freetown the Unicef representative for Sierra Leone, Mr. Mahimbo Mdoe, expressed gratitude about a pledge of about $1.3 million conveyed by the Ambassador of Japan to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Mr. Keiichi Katakami, and about earlier donations to UNICEF-Sierra Leone in the past years, amounting to over $20 million. The intended application of the funding is the goal to half child and maternal mortality by 2010, to introduce a social health insurance scheme, to improve equipment and to train health professionals.

The British government has announced a £2.3 billion package of aid to attempt to support the country’s car manufacturing industry.

Lord Peter Mandelson, the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform announced to the House of Lords that the government planned to obtain £1.3 billion from the European Investment Bank for the industry. A further £1 billion loan is available if the industry agrees to invest it in environmentally friendly vehicles.

Mandleson told the Lords that the industry is vital to the British economy, which with “near one million employees from manufacturing to retailing” provides “£10 billion worth of added value to the economy.” However, he stressed that the government was not providing a “blank cheque” and would not provide operating subsidies.

His newly-appointed shadow Kenneth Clarke told the House of Commons that the plans were “pretty small beer” and repeated the Conservative charge that the government was “dithering” in the face of the downturn. Liberal Democrat John Thurso also expressed disappointment in the plans.

Talks of an election are beginning to rise again in the media as Canada’s Conservatives rallied last night in Toronto.

Conservative MPs came to the two day event in Toronto for a training session. It was a campaign-style event with about 5,000 party supporters. During the event, the Prime Minister talked of an expected upcoming federal election and other issues that are affecting the nation today.

“We are here to plan,” said Prime Minister Stephen Harper at the rally held on St. Patricks Day. “Plan for a future that could include an election… An election that the opposition could impose on Canadians at any time.”

This comes two days before the spring budget, which will be announced on Monday. According to Reuters, the Conservative government needs another party to support the budget. If not, this would trigger an election.

According to political analysts, the Conservatives at least need 36 to 49% support. They also have been spending a large amount of money speculated to be used for the next election. Harper stated he does not want an election but one could be called by the opposition Liberals “at any time”.

He also compared St. Patrick to the Conservative Party of Canada winning last years election.

“Legend says that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. And last year, you, the grassroots members of the Conservative party, drove the Grits out of Ottawa. Now that’s something worth saying cheers to,” said Harper, who is of British ancestry.

The Conservative government was elected on January 23, 2006, ending twelve years of Liberal government.
