The US Embassy in Kazakhstan has condemned the destruction by Kazakh riot police of eleven homes within a Hare Krishna village. The destruction took place on November 21st in the central Asian republic of Kazakhstan and has been termed unjust treatment of the religious group.

“The forceful eviction of homeowners in freezing temperatures and the destruction of their possessions contradicted principles of due process and fairness,” the US Embassy said in a December 7 statement.

The Embassy further urged authorities to cease “further aggressive actions” and instead seek a peaceful conclusion to ongoing legal disputes with Hare Krishnas concerning the land.

Officials from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in the U.S. had previously called for an international response to the November 21 demolition of 13 homes, and a range of groups have condemned it, including the British Parliament and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The US State Department’s 2005 International Religious Freedom Report cited instances of “continued local government and police harassment” reported by Hare Krishnas in Kazakhstan. It reported that over 50% of the country’s population is historically Muslim but the republic includes congregations of Russian Orthodox, Baptists and other Christian and religious groups.

Ironically the original demolition of the Hare Krishna homes occurred on the same day President Nursultan Nazarbayev was in London for a meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair seeking his support for Kazakhstan’s bid to be the OSCE chairman-in-office in 2009. In London, some 10,000 members of Britain’s Hindu community protested the demolition of the Hare Krishna property in Kazakhstan.

This was not the first time Kazakh authorities have attempted to confiscate the Hare Krishna community’s land. In April 2006, Kazakh authorities had tried to bulldoze the homes, but retreated in the presence of journalists.

In an official statement issued after the demolition event, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, an independent federal agency, expressed concern about the treatment of Hare Krishnas.

“Recent steps against the Hare Krishnas and members of other religious communities indicate that the government of Kazakhstan, regrettably, is moving in the wrong direction with regard to respecting the universal right to freedom of religion or belief,” said Felice D. Gaer, chair of the Commission.

Many people have heard that walking your dog is good for its health but not many know how walking helps your dog stay fit & longer. It’s true that your dog will have more energy, but not just any energy it will be stronger & longer lasting energy that will provide your dog with more energy than if you don’t walk your dog.

Walking your dog gives you a chance to get in shape and have a good workout while at the same time giving you the opportunity to improve your appearance and feel better about yourself so that you can use that as a motivator to go out and do more exercise, and more weight loss, in the future. You see, your dog is much the same way. It does all the work for you just look the part!

Exercise also improves the immune system, which is important as that helps to fight off colds and flu. Dogs are also more prone to develop cancer, so taking care of their bodies by doing regular exercise is important as well. As much as you want to enjoy your walk, however, make sure that you keep safety in mind and stay a distance from your pet whenever you go for a walk.

Walking your dog is also very important for its emotional well being. If you’re worried that your dog may get hurt while running down the street, you need to relax. You don’t have to worry too much about your dog hurting itself while running down the street. Walking your dog, in itself, can keep the dog physically fit.

Another reason to walk your dog is that it is a natural way to relieve tension. Walking helps your dog to release pent up stress and has been scientifically proven to do this by increasing blood flow to the muscles. Walking also improves the circulation of your dog’s brain as well as helping your dog relax. This is why your dog gets along so well with others because it knows that when it gets stressed out it can go home and lay down in a comfortable place.

There are some dogs who are known for having high blood pressure problems & there is some evidence that these dogs are more likely to get cancer as well. So the best thing for you to do is to take good care of your dog’s health by doing regular walks which will help both you and your dog maintain the good health they’ve already been blessed with.

When walking your dog is well cared for you will notice the difference as well. You will be able to see the health improvements like your dog will become energetic more often, you will notice that your dog is healthier and more alert, your dog will have better eyesight and you’ll notice that your dog will be happier.

So the next time you hear that you need to exercise more to keep your dog fit & fitness there is no need to stress about this. Go out there and start walking your dog.

If you have any doubts, just walk your dog at the park or a public park. Just make sure that you do a good job so your dog doesn’t have a lot of accidents or get injured while running down the street, this may also be the cause of your dog getting ill.

If you’re not going to do it then get your dog some toys for him to play with. The best toys for your dog are the ones that allow him to be active without hurting himself. You should never buy a high impact toy as the chances of your dog getting injured while playing are high.

One more thing that you should also consider while walking your dog is that the longer you walk the better it will feel for your dog. You will notice that your dog will get used to your presence and he will get more energetic if he’s able to move around more.

And the last thing that you need to know is that by walking your dog you will soon discover that you love to walk your dog. I know it sounds weird but this will really change your dog’s life! It’s a natural way for you to let your dog get used to you again. And most important of all it will save a lot of money that you have been spending on a pet for a long time.

Government delegates are meeting this week at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) general assembly in Geneva to discuss the WIPO Development Agenda. The meeting will determine how developing countries must implement existing controversial intellectual property rights laws including copyrights, patents, and trademarks. They will also consider the disputed proposal for a global Treaty on the Protection of Broadcastings and Webcasting Organizations.

The Broadcastings/Webcasting Treaty proposal, pushed by traditional broadcast organizations, and lobbyists for a handful of Internet publishers, including Yahoo, is being pushed hardest by the United States government, which ironically, has never considered such legislation domestically. The treaty would create a new layer of intellectual monopoly rights for broadcasters, potentially including ‘webcasters’. Broadcasters would then be able to claim rights over material they broadcast–even material that was in the public domain or licensed under creative commons or copyleft licenses.

Many developing countries including Brazil, South Africa, India, Iran, Chile, and Venezuela are asking for time to evaluate and study the proposals, and opposition to the treaty has been registered by numerous NGOs and public interest advocates. Fearing a repeat of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), when US copyright law was made more strict to conform to WIPO standards, a coalition of U.S. NGOs is currently circulating a sign on letter calling for public hearings on the implications of the Broadcaster Treaty.

In a recent Financial Times article Professor James Boyle (Law, Duke University) [1] raised objections to the Broadcasting/Webcasting Treaty, saying “intellectual property laws are created without any empirical evidence that they are necessary, or that they will help rather than hurt”. He elaborated that such laws are made “as though it were just a deal brokered between industry groups,” and that concerns for “public interest in competition, access, free speech, and vigorous technological markets takes a back seat.” Professor Boyle fears that “communications networks are increasingly built around intellectual property rules” with harmful effects.

SpaceX called off the much-delayed inaugural launch of their new Falcon 1 rocket on Saturday from Kwajalein’s Omelek Island launch site. The intent was to launch the U.S. Air Force Academy’s FalconSat 2 satellite, which will monitor plasma interactions with the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetosphere.

The launch was delayed, then finally cancelled after an oxygen boil-off vent had accidentally been left open. The oxygen was unable to cool the helium pressurant, which then proceeded to evaporate faster than it could be replenished. A main computer issue, probably serious enough to cause a scrub on its own, was also discovered.

This long-anticipated flight was originally expected to be launched in January 2005, however a series of setbacks forced a series of delays, with the flight most recently scheduled to be in early 2006. It was intended to be launched from the Kwajalein atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The maiden voyage was originally intended to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California with a Naval Research Laboratory satellite and a Space Services Incorporated space burial payload.

24 of 26 Swiss Cantons rejected the proposal for a single health insurance system, in which premiums would be based on income and wealth. The vote on Sunday was the latest in a series of attempts to cut rising costs and ease the financial burden on citizens.

Around 71% of voters rejected the reform. Turnout was at about 46%, slightly above the Swiss average.

As expected, voters in the main German-speaking part of the country turned down the planned reform, which was supported by the centre-left but opposed by the centre-right as well as the business community, parliament and the government.

Opposition in the French and Italian speaking regions was less pronounced. The cantons Jura and Neuchâtel in the French speaking regions voted in favor of the proposed reforms.

Health insurance premiums are higher in southern and western Swiss cantons than in German-speaking areas.

The Swiss Interior Minister Pascal Couchepin said an important part of the Swiss Population appeared to be opposed to “a revolution” in health insurance but he said that he wanted current reforms currently under discussion in the Swiss Parliament to go ahead. He called on all sides, especially health insurers and the cantonal authorities, to make efforts to reduce spending on health insurance and aim for a greater cost efficiency. Currently Switzerland has 87 private insurers providing mandatory basic health care coverage for Swiss residents under a 1996 law. But costs have sky-rocketed. Over 100,000 people are not covered by health insurance due to non payment.

To win the battle of the cost of health care, everyone must place his or her private interests behind the interests of the general public. -Pascal Couchepin at a news conference

Opponents to the initiative argued that a single insurance system would lead to complacency and create a two-tier system, in which the wealthy would be the only ones available to afford to have additional private insurance coverage.

Supporters of the initiative said a single health insurer would increase the system’s efficiency and allow for annual savings of at least 300 million Swiss Francs (about $245 million) in administrative costs. Currently, the funding system is unbalanced, since many clients on low incomes use state subsidies to pay their premiums, according to the Green Party and the Social Democrats.

The initiative to unite all the insurance companies and introduce premiums based on wealth and income was the most recent in a series of attempts over the past ten years to reduce the public spending on health care. A proposal, similar to this recent proposal, to modify the funding system of the health insurance companies was rejected by 73% of voters in 2003.

Switzerland has the most expensive health system in Europe. Switzerland’s expenditure on health care was 11.6% in 2005, in front of Germany and France but behind the United States.
