A strong odor of natural gas permeated through parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Jersey City early this morning. Authorities assert that there is no cause for alarm and assure the air quality, though smelly, is safe enough to breathe. New York City’s Health Department, the Coast Guard, and Con Ed are still on the scene.

In a press conference, Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that a small gas leak at Bleeker St. and Sixth Av. “could not account for a smell so pervasive throughout the city”. PATH trains were temporarily suspended from Hoboken, New Jersey, to the 33rd St. terminus, and an MTA control tower at West 4th St. was also temporarily shut down.

“Sensors do not show any high concentration of natural gas that would cause concern” continued Bloomberg. “We want to take our time and make sure we don’t get the wrong information. We cannot speculate, but these are the facts: the smell is there, we don’t know the source, and it doesn’t appear to be dangerous.”

Some buildings in Midtown Manhattan were evacuated as a safety precaution, and HVAC systems in the area have been brought back online. Jersey City EMTs report that seven people have been taken to hospital, but it is unclear if it is a direct result of mercaptanline inhalation.

WINS-AM reporter Juliett Poppa has been reporting along 34th St., commenting that the odor was most noticeable around Fifth Av., but has now dissipated. Radio announcer Lee Harris added that the odor was noticeable even in their Broadway and 57th St. studios. During an interview on air, a Con Ed spokesman said that no gas leak has been found.

“We’ve had reports as far north as 96th St. on the West Side and 130th on the East” said one NYC 311 operator (This was during this journalist’s report of a gas smell at 205th Street.)

Natural gas supplied for domestic and commercial use is odorless. Mercaptan is added to give natural gas its distinctive smell as an aid to leak detection.

With the kind of diet, environment and stressors that we have today it becomes so easy to make your skin look older than you really are. If you want to regain that youthful glow, there are certain things that you can do or practice to bring that out. But other than that, you must also know about the things which you need to avoid because repeated exposure will render those regimens to be a lost cause. Here are the things that you need to protect yourself from to make a youthful looking skin.

Adequately Protect Your Skin from Sun exposure

If you want to protect your skin from wrinkles and spots, you should avoid direct sun exposure. Just imagine how grapes turn out when they are exposed to the sun to make raisins. So bring an umbrella at all times if possible, you may find this hard to keep up at first but this will most definitely protect your face from the sun. Apply some sunscreen that has a high SPF with UVA and UVB protection for additional and stronger defence.

Wear shades especially during summer or in tropical countries. This way you prevent wrinkles that form around the eyes and even sagging that can also result.

Avoid the Cigarette Smoke

For those who are fond of puffing stick after stick of cigarette and yet clamour for younger looking skin, better start dissing the urge to smoke. This depletes the skin from its moisture making it look dry and prone to breakouts. Smoking also promotes skin wrinkles to form particularly on the lips and the mouth.

Avoid Too Much Alcohol

Alcohol is beneficial under moderation, but drinking too much can dry the skin. In addition to that it also dilates the small blood vessels on the skin which can be permanently damaged over time. This will result to a flushed appearance instead of that healthy glow.

Avoid Sleepless Nights if Possible

Lack of sleep can create a plethora of health problems if you don t control it. Give yourself enough time to snooze, at least 6 hours of uninterrupted shuteye to help your body recuperate from the day s stress. Sleeping will give your skin that refreshed or well-rested aura.

So avoid caffeine a few hours before going to bed because not only will these leave you sleepless, but it also dries up the skin. This is probably the best skin rejuvenation technique that you can adapt.

Avoid Rubbing Your Face

After washing your face you should pat it dry instead of rubbing the towel. This may not be evident now, but this action can actually contribute to your wrinkles when you grow old.

Avoid Sleeping in a Prone Position

Sleeping on your side or on your chest with your face on your pillow can cause wrinkles later on. Did you ever have that time where you wake up and you find lines on your face due to the folds on your pillows? It may disappear in few minutes but this can leave an imprint beneath the skin which later reappears as wrinkles when you grow old.

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

After three days of presentations, discussion and general community interactions, the fifth annual Wikimedia conference, Wikimania, has completed, and attendeess are returning home. Wikimania 2009 — held in Buenos Aires, Argentina — was the first Wikimania held in the southern hemisphere as well as the first in a Spanish-speaking country.

Over 80 presentations, panels and workshops were held over the three day conference. Among the many topics presented were presentations on the Wikimedia Communities, how Wikimedia and related projects operate within Latin America, and the technology which relates to Wikimedia and free content. There were also panels on Wikipedia’s Growing Pains, Wikimedia chapters, and Semantic MediaWiki. Many presentation offered simultaneous live audio translation into English and Spanish.

Richard Stallman presented the opening keynote titled “Before, after, and around Wikipedia”. In his keynote, he discussed what he calls the four freedoms. He also addressed what he perceives to be the issues with Wikipedia, and particularly with the Spanish Wikipedia.

Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikimedia, also presented his annual report on the The State of the Wiki.

In her keynote, Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation, Sue Gardner addressed a number of the concerns within the Wikimedia Foundation. Among these concerns, she noted that Wikimedia sites currently underperform in Asia. According to a comScore report, approximately 16% of Internet users in Asia use Wikipedia compared with the approximately 1/3 world average.

Gardner also said to help address that issue, the Foundation has been working with the Chinese government to help open lines of communication. To assist the development of Wikimedia sites in India, representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation visited India this year to conduct media interviews assist in holding a Wikipedia academy. They also discussed was to help the development of an Indian chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Starting August 25 and continuing throughout Wikimania, the MediaWiki developers were hard at work in the basement of the Centro Cultural General San Martín at the Wikimania Codeathon. Wikimedia developer Brion Vibber presented the highlights of the Codeathon in a presentation on the third day. Among the new features and changes are support for jQuery, allowing improved AJAX support, an overhaul of the maintenance scripts, new upload features including upload via url, several image editing functions, LiquidTreads and new AJAX editing helpers. Other features now under development are new maps support, an eventual migration to a database based configuration system, as well as a new system that allows for much quicker updates for translated MediaWiki messages.

David S. Touretzky, prominent free speech activist and critic of Scientology, discussed his opinions on the recent Internet backlash against the Church of Scientology in an interview with former Scientologist and Wikinews reporter Nicholas Turnbull. The recent conflict on the Internet between critics of Scientology and the Church has been spurred on in declarations by a nebulous Internet entity using the name Anonymous that the Church of Scientology “will be destroyed”. Anonymous has directed recent protests at Scientology centres across the world, which have attracted significant numbers of individuals supporting the cause. In recent e-mail correspondence with Wikinews, a representative of the Church of Scientology declared that the Church considers the activities of Anonymous to be illegal, and that Anonymous “will be handled and stopped”.

Touretzky, a research professor in artificial intelligence and computational neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University, has been a prominent critic of the Church of Scientology since mid-1995, and has been protesting against Scientology vociferously since then; he has also run websites that publish material that Scientology wishes to keep suppressed from the public eye, such as extracts from Scientology’s formerly-confidential Operating Thetan (OT) materials. Touretzky views the actions of the Church of Scientology as being “a threat to free speech”, and has endured harassment by the Church of Scientology for his activities.

The Church of Scientology continues to suffer damage to its public reputation through increased exposure on the Internet and vocal protests by Scientology critics such as Prof. Touretzky. A recent event that focused intense attention on Scientology’s totalitarian attitude was the leak of an internal Church of Scientology propaganda video to the Internet video sharing site YouTube, in which celebrity Scientologist Tom Cruise spoke heavily in Scientology’s jargon and stated that that “we [Scientology] are the authorities” on resolving the difficulties of humanity. The declaration of war by Anonymous followed shortly after this leak, in the form of a video posted to the Internet.

The ongoing dispute, cast by some as Scientology versus the Internet, brought Scientology terms such as “SP” (Suppressive Person, an enemy of Scientology) and “KSW” (Keeping Scientology Working) into general usage by non-Scientologists from the late 1990s onwards; increased attention has been drawn to Scientology by the release of the Cruise video in addition to media coverage. This focus has caused an even greater propagation of these terms across the outside world, as Touretzky comments in the interview.

Wikinews asked Prof. Touretzky about the impact that the activities of Anonymous will have on Scientology, the public relations effect of the Tom Cruise video, the recent departure of individuals from the Church of Scientology’s executive management, the strategies that Anonymous will employ and Touretzky’s experiences of picketing the Church.

Get a background check on your new love before it’s too late

Angelina works in a busy office all day and spends much of her time chained to her PC so when she found herself single again she turned to the Internet to fill the hole that she now felt in her life. It didn’t take long for her to find a new boyfriend but she wishes now that she had checked to see if he had arrest warrants before they got serious together.

It can be safe to find dates on the Internet but you must be careful

Do you have the time to go clubbing, hang around in bars and join loads of activities just in case you’ll find Mr Right? No not many people do today. Life is such a busy place and you have to find faster ways of doing things. The Internet provides quick and efficient ways of doing so many things and dating is one of them. Everyone is doing it and even I managed to find a soulmate this way.

So after a few short evenings of searching online Angelina met George. They got on really well and after they had spent a few weeks chatting to each other in email and messenger they decided to meet in real life. Angelina had purposely searched for someone local to make this stage easier. It’s no good finding a soulmate if they are too far away to visit now is it?

Their first date

Angelina and George followed all the rules of safe dating for the first few times that they met. They met in a public place in broad daylight and always made sure that someone knew where they were going. Angelina is very sensible and knows the importance of staying safe.

George swept Angelina off her feet every time they met and she fell madly in love with him. She was so happy a few months later when he asked her to marry her so they set an early date for the wedding.

A simple background check could avoid embarrassment at the wedding

A few short months later Angelina looked stunning in her wedding dress. She glowed with excitement and thought that this was going to be the happiest day of her life.

Angelina had never been more wrong about anything. You see George never turned up at the wedding and all the excitement and happiness that Angelina had felt turned to hate and bitterness, not to mention the embarrassment of being stood up at your wedding with a hundred or more guests. Oh yes and the huge expense of the wedding itself.

George had arrest warrants and had been apprehended by the police

George had climbed into the wedding car that day but he never got to the wedding because the cops had stopped and arrested him. Angelina had no idea that he had several arrest warrants out on him, one was for skipping bail on a sex offender charge!

How could Angelina have found out if he had arrest warrants

Angelina could have avoided this embarrassing conclusion to the relationship if only she had done a simple online background check on George when they first met. It’s so easy to do and it could have turned up all the arrest warrants, criminal records and marriage records on George. Yes he might have been married, you never know do you?

This is a story that I made up to illustrate a very real problem that affects thousands of people every day. How do you know that new friends and other people that you come in contact with are actually who they say they are and that they aren’t hiding something from you.

Find out if he has arrest warrants now before you get serious

Angelena had a narrow escape. Have fun when you date but don’t you get caught out like she did. Do a Background Check on your boyfriends now.

Satire site Uncyclopedia, a parody of online encyclopedia Wikipedia, has been labeled by the Malaysian government as dangerous. The Internal Security Department of Malaysia issued the warning today, saying that the site has “messages and information insulting Malaysia”.

The warning notes the creation date of the website as being 5 January 2005, and hosted by Wikia, Inc., both of which are correct. However, it claims Wikia owns Wikipedia; Wikipedia is a charitable non-profit website owned by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, while Wikia is an independent, for-profit company.

The report evidently mentions that Uncyclopedia covers Malaysian “history, culture, the political leaders, the government, the national song and the name / history of the national flag,” none of which is “correct”. They accuse the website of helping to reinforce a bad international image of their country.

There are no reports of the site being blocked from access within the country, only this statement, which urges Malaysians not to circulate the content.

Uncyclopedia’s article on Malaysia begins:

Essentially the penis of Asia which is located to the north of their cousins who live on an even smaller island Singapore, Malaysia (also known as Bolehland) is a young nation of diverse cultures and races such as F1 Formula-1 and Nascar. The timezone of Malaysia is unique because it follows the system of +1/+2 PMT (Predetermined Meeting Time) which is 1 or 2 hours later than PMT. Most foreigners have difficulty adjusting to this new timezone as they tend to show up 1 or 2 hours earlier than the local counterparts. The nation is moving forward with a vision towards becoming a developed nation by the year 2020, 3030, 4040 or whatever catchy number.

…Another common state that Malaysians have is denial (no lah, where got?), which incidentally, is a river in Egypt.

The site has fired back with a parody article posted at the site under their UnNews section, titled Uncyclopedia Internal Security Department warns on Malaysia. The article suggests that the “Internal Security Department of the Uncyclomedia Foundation,” which is a facetious and fictitious parent organization of Uncyclopedia, identifies Malaysia “as a dangerous country… It warned its people not to use the country today.”

There are forty-seven individual language editions of Uncyclopedia, including Tolololpedia, which is written in Bahasa Melayu, the Malay language. This is in addition to fictional “language” editions which include Oscar Wilde, Newspeak, N00b, White Supremacist, and Re: PharmaccgRy.

Ideogram of the human chromosome 11

In the largest study of its kind, a genetic analysis of 1,168 families with multiple cases of autism has identified genetic links to autism. A previously overlooked stretch of DNA on chromosome 11 implicates a gene called neurexin 1 and increases the evidence for the involvement of neurexins and genes related to glutamate transmission in the brain.

Genetic studies of autism have previously been undertaken; however the new study involves the collaboration of more than 120 scientists from more than 50 institutions representing 19 countries who pooled their data as part of the Autism Genome Project. The findings were published in the Feb. 18 issue of Nature Genetics.

Bob Wright, co-founder of Autism Speaks, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of autism, said: “The identification of susceptibility genes will provide profound new insight into the basis of autism offering a route to breakthroughs in new treatments in support of families.” Autism Speaks funded this project in conjunction with the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Joachim Hallmayer, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at Stanford and chair of the collaboration’s executive committee, explains what is next: “While promising, these results need to be followed up with more refined genetic maps to home in on other specific candidate genes. We also need to look more closely at chromosomal anomalies in large samples of children with autism.” In the paper, researchers caution that the genetic foundation of autism probably involves multiple genes and chromosomal abnormalities.

Autism affects about one in every 150 children, and the CDC has called it an “urgent health concern”. Autism is a developmental disorder which impairs social interaction, communication and features restricted and repetitive interests and activities. Twin studies and other research clearly suggest a genetic basis for the condition. Currently there is no cure for autism, but both behavioral or sensory interventions and drugs can influence the symptoms.
