The Five Elements of Creation

by

Paul Keetch

If you’re anything like me, the creative process can be at times the most gratifying experience imaginable. Everything comes together in a flurry of creative activity, you enter a “Flow” state where time seems to stand still and nothing else but what you’re working on exists in that moment of time.

The flip-side is that sometimes the blank page, screen or canvas stares back at you and seems to laugh at your inability to produce. These moments feel agonizingly long, every little thing distracts you and nothing gets produced. During those times it can be extremely challenging to be “okay” with the result (or lack of result) that you’re getting. But when you begin to understand the five elements of creation you can analyze your situation, understand which of the five elements you are currently involved in and, possibly, revisit one of the previous elements to reinvigorate your creative energy. So what are the five elements of creation? I’m glad you asked… 1. Information Gathering This is the foraging element of creation when you gather as much information and inspiration as possible. This can include researching related material, interviewing experts or brainstorming ideas, possible angles of approach, etc. Information gathering is where we must all start if we want to produce something that is both coherent and useful to whoever is going to consume, utilize or appreciate what we’re creating. The process of information gathering should be done without prejudice, which simply means that you gather anything and everything that may be of relevance, without specifically analyzing it. 2. Sifting & Qualifying This element is where you sort your information more thoroughly and qualify whether it is relevant to you at this time, or not. It is where you delve into the practicality and the relative usefulness of all the information and ideas you gathered or brainstormed in the first step. By sifting and qualifying you become more familiar with the usefulness of the good information while excluding the non-useful or currently irrelevant items. An important note here is to hang on to the information you are discarding for your current project, as it may become useful when working on another project down the line. 3. Gestation Period Think of this is as the time during which you are inactively processing all of the information you’ve gathered and sorted. It’s like the caterpillar in the cocoon or the egg sitting in incubation beneath the mother hen awaiting birth. During the gestation period you may seem or feel to be in active as it relates to your creative project, but your mind is working on the problem at a deeper level than your conscious mind. Your subconscious self can make connections in a way that your conscious mind cannot, making this an imperative element of the creative process. J.K. Rowling, author of the acclaimed Harry Potter books, reportedly conceived of the book series while on a long train journey. She claims the idea just “fell into her head”, which is gestation at work. This period can take as little as 5 minutes and as long as 5 years or more for the “a-ha!” moment to arrive. 4. Creative Production As you can probably imagine, this is the practical element of creation after the “a-ha!” moment has arrived and you set pen to paper, keys to keyboard, brush to canvas, etc. It is the period where you are actively producing or creating whatever thing it is that you are working on. In this phase of creation it continues to be important that you not edit or censor yourself too harshly – there will be plenty of time for that later! What’s important here is the physical act of capturing your creation in whatever form calls to you. Whether you are writing, sketching, orating or designing, this is the active part of creation and is often the most fun and engaging. 5. Editing The final phase of the process is the editing portion where you go over the work you’ve produced with an editor’s eye (or ear) to ensure that the final product delivers on the initial intent with which you started work in the first place. During this phase you may or may not solicit feedback from others, particularly if they are either experts or your target audience. Once completed you may have identified changes that need to be made and may choose to go back into the Creative Production phase to re-produce your product. It is a well-known fact that many books are written and re-written several times before they ever make it to the final printed version. Even then errors and inconsistencies are often found and corrected in later revisions of the work. It is possible, even likely, that you will revisit one or more of the five elements of creation at least once, particularly the creative production and editing phases, although you may find that you are able to complete an initial portion and must then go back into gestation for some period of time to allow the next phase to reveal itself. The power of knowing these five elements of creation truly lies in being able to plan them accordingly and to identify which phase you are in if and when you get stuck at any point along the way. Revisiting the initial information gathering phase or reviewing some of your discarded research could spark an idea or concept that allows you to go back into production mode quickly and with energy. Your Action Step is to see if you can identify which of the five elements or phases you are currently engaged in as they relate to a creative project you are working on either at home or at work and see if you have missed any previous steps. It is an all-too-common mistake to try and jump straight into creative production, which is as sure a recipe for frustration as any I can imagine.

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

One great benefit of call center management is that your clients will always have someone to talk to. In the consumer world, some of the pet-peeves include having to call back or being put on hold. These instances can result in poor feedback or your customers and potential customers taking their business elsewhere. With call center management however, your customers will have someone to talk to immediately they call. This will result in increased customer satisfaction which is essential to the profitability of any business.

Business owners have a difficult decision to make where communication with their clients is concerned. Call Center Management service in St. Louis is an especially good idea for businesses for a number of reasons. For a business to be profitable there has to be an effective and efficient mechanism for communicating with clients. The unfortunate truth is that if clients can’t reach you, they will easily go to the competition. To avoid this from happening therefore, call center management offers effective communication solutions. There are many benefits to be gained from such as service.

Another great advantage of call center management is the potential to branch out and reach new clientele. This is especially the case for businesses hoping to compete on a global platform. Call centers will usually be able to cater for multilingual clients. This therefore means that clients in other parts of the world aren’t locked out of the business for the simple reason that the phones are answered in only one language. Similarly, a call center management service usually offers 24hour assistance. This therefore means that clients in different time-zones can be attended to quickly and efficiently.

These are just some of the advantages of Call Center Management in St. Louis. To stay ahead of the competition, it is important that you keep your clients happy and address their communication needs in a timely manner. It is however not as simple as choosing any call center management service. You have to deal only with professionals such as Business Centers Of Missouri Inc among others. Such companies have great experience and all the necessary technology to ensure that your business runs smoothly and profitably especially where customer service is concerned.

A new 154-page Government Accountability Office (GAO) report says seven federal departments together spent US$1.6 billion on 343 contracts with public relations firms, advertising agencies, and media organizations, as well as individuals involved in such activities.

Congressional Democrats requested the report after several incidents surfaced in which journalists or commentators were paid to promote the Bush administrations programs, but did not disclose the financing, so called payola. In one case, Armstrong Williams was paid $186,000 for promotions of President Bush’s No Child Left Behind law. The administrations position was that an agencies’ mission includes spreading information about federal programs.

At that time, the GAO had independent objections to the ready-to-air news stories the administration’s provided to TV stations in order to promote it policies. The administration claimed the burden of disclosure falls to the TV stations.

Congress has now inserted a provision into an annual spending bill requiring federal agencies to include “a clear notification” within the text or audio of a prepackaged news story that it was prepared or paid for by the government.

Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) said “Careful oversight of this spending is essential given the track record of the Bush administration, which has used taxpayer dollars to fund covert propaganda within the United States.”

The seven agencies covered by the report are Commerce, Defense, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Interior, Treasury, and Veterans Affairs.

A GMC Yukon hybrid model

American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) announced plans Friday to shut down about 1,100 of its dealerships, in an effort to evade bankruptcy and lower its expenditures.

GM’s move comes a day after Chrysler, another U.S. car maker, released a list of 789 dealerships that it was closing. Unlike Chrylser, GM will not publicly announce the dealerships that it intends to shut down. Instead, dealerships whose franchises won’t be renewed after October of next year will receive a private letter telling them of the decision.

At the moment, GM has 6,246 dealers in the U.S. It intends to reduce that number to 3,605 by the end of 2010. GM said the dealerships that were to be closed are “underperforming and very small sales volume U.S. dealers.”

“They’re dealerships that are in most cases hurting, losing money, and in danger of going out of business anyway,” said GM’s sales, service, and marketing vice president in a telephone conference. “It’s a move that people could argue should have been taken years ago but this leadership team had no choice but to do it today.”

The dealers that are to be closed represent 18% of the firm’s dealership network, but only 7% of GM’s 2008 revenue.

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

The Department for Business, Innovations and Skills (BIS) is consulting on consolidating and modernising consumer law enforcement powers.

The consultation focuses on five specific areas and proposes reforms to the consumer law enforcement regime with the stated objectives of reducing regulatory burdens on businesses, protecting civil liberties and improving effectiveness of enforcement.

The consultation seeks view on proposals in the following five areas:

1. Consolidating and simplifying consumer law powers

There are currently several public bodies enforcing consumer law, including Trading Standards Services (TSS), the Office of Fair Trading and various Consumer Protection Cooperation enforcers under the Enterprise Act 2002. These bodies derive their enforcement powers under more than 60 separate pieces of legislation covering many business sectors (including retailers, estate agents, providers of consumer credit etc.), with some being sector-specific.

BIS is proposing to introduce generic enforcement powers in place of existing legislation to make these powers more transparent and consistent. The new law would include:

alignment of investigatory powers to provide consistency and transparency across all consumer legislation selected by BIS for consolidation

alignment of powers to allow TSS to make test purchases

clarification of powers to require the production of documents, including digital content

alignment of penalties across consumer law for obstructing enforcement officers

It is clear from the proposals that as previously flagged, the role of the Office of Fair Trading in this area will be all but extinguished in favour of the TSS.

2. Improving cross boundary co-operation and authorisation for the Trading Standards Services (TSS)

BIS proposes to authorise TSS in England and Wales to investigate and bring proceedings outside their own local authority.

3. Removing barriers to the use of civil procedures for enforcement

Breaches of consumer law can be enforced through either civil injunctive relief or by means of criminal prosecution. BIS’s concern is that the TSS is unable to present civil cases in County Courts, meaning that the cost of civil enforcement is often higher than it needs to be (due to the need to hire external lawyers) and contributes to the relatively now number of civil enforcement actions by TSS compared to the number of criminal prosecutions.

BIS is proposing permitting the accreditation of individual TSS professionals to enable them to present cases in County Courts to encourage the use of civil enforcement which may be more proportionate than criminal prosecutions. An example given of the type of case which TSS could potentially present in court itself is in relation to a company cold-calling consumers with claims that it could sell their cars or refund their service fee, neither of which it in fact did.

4. Introducing more flexible qualification requirements for TSS officers

BIS proposes introducing general competency requirements for TSS professionals, whose only current statutory qualification requirement relates to weights and measures enforcement and no other consumer law.

5. Enabling competition by opening up of calibration of measurement standards market

BIS’s proposal is to assist local authorities to reduce their costs in enforcing weights and measures legislation by providing them with alternative testing laboratories.

Why this matters:

BIS hopes to simplify and consolidate investigatory and enforcement powers so that they are clearer and more transparent. Given the myriad of consumer legislation, including additional legislation in relation to some specific business sectors, a set of generic enforcement powers is likely to be welcomed by businesses.

It remains to be seen whether the ability of TSS to present civil cases in County Courts would lead to an increase in the overall number of investigations and enforcement actions, or whether it would in fact result in more proportionate penalties for businesses for non-compliance.

The consultation highlights how the consumer protection landscape is likely to be changing over the next few years, both in terms of legislation and enforcement. Together with the anticipated Consumer Rights Bill, businesses can expect to see more changes in this area in the next few years.

At about 15:30 local time (1430 UTC) on Tuesday a fire was reported in the “Kiss & Fly” section of a parking structure at Stavanger Airport, Sola in Norway. The structure has over 3000 parking spaces; reports said more than half of those were filled. The airport was quickly closed to air traffic.

It was initially reported the fire started in an electric vehicle, but news broadcaster NRK later reported the fire started in a recalled 2005 Opel Zafira. The car was recalled after a similar fire in Cork, Ireland in August last year, causing damage to about 60 cars. Police said they questioned the car’s owner.

The fire produced heavy smoke, and local officials said there was danger the building might collapse. Nils-Erik Haagenrud of Rogaland Fire and Rescue said late on Tuesday no personnel would be sent into the building. Rogaland Fire and Rescue requested support and equipment from other fire departments. The airport and nearby hotel were both evacuated and local police warned people in the general vicinity to stay inside and close exterior vents and windows. Through Tuesday evening the fire was reduced and the order for a fire extinguisher robot from Oslo Fire and Rescue was canceled.

The airport closure also led to Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg being stranded after a visit to the Johan Sverdrup oil field. Solberg posted on Twitter asking for places to eat for the seven hour drive from Stavanger to the capital of Oslo.

Reports as of Wednesday said an estimated two to three hundred vehicles had been damaged or destroyed, but no humans had been hurt.

By about 22:00 local time (2100 UTC) on Tuesday the flames were under control. Local firefighters planned to continue to monitor the situation and work to prevent further damage. It was also discovered the structure was built without sprinklers. Stavanger Airport, Sola was to open on Wednesday morning, but returning to normal service was expected to take longer. Affected travelers were advised to contact their airlines for rebooking.

Earlier this month, Wikinews spoke with University of Sussex professor of economics L. Alan Winters regarding the decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union (EU) in the 2016 Brexit referendum and the subsequent negotiations leading up to and following the EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement of December, which he has researched extensively. In a call, a Wikinews correspondent spoke with Professor Winters about recent developments in UK trade policy to learn more about his observations.

Winters is professor of economics at the University of Sussex, as well as founding director and fellow of the UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO). His career spans over 15 years, including as chief economist at the Department for International Development, director of the Development Research Group of the World Bank, CEO of the Migrating Out of Poverty Research Programme Consortium and advisor for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the World Trade Organization and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Three reports where Winters is listed as an author were used as reference during the interview: “COVID-19 will reinforce the Brexit shock”, “The Costs of Brexit” and “Taking stock of the new UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement: governance, state subsidies and the level playing field”.

Winters was awarded the title “Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath”, styled C.B., on June 16, 2012 as part of the 2012 Birthday Honours.
