Is it customary for car dealerships to sell you a different car than the one you test drove?

I had decided on a car to purchase after test driving many makes and models. However, when I went to take delivery, it was not the same one I had test driven ( I had noted the VIN was different). When I inquired, the sales rep said that they have one vehicle of each model for customers to test drive and it is only used for that purpose. The other car was the same model and it should be any different.

Maybe so, but is this something that’s happening now with new car dealerships?

Dealerships often have what is termed "demo" cars. These trim lines are usually loaded (have a lot of bells and whistles) to excite the customer and make the model look good. If what you described happened, it is not ethical, but not illegal. On the flip side, the dealer may have sold the actual car you drove and just substituted another car with the same features. This is not unusual.

How do guarenteed credit car dealerships really work?

I would like to buy a car and need the credit approval. Going to a guarenteed credit car dealership is my only choice. What exactly will it take to be approved and how does that work?

Try Carmax as long as you have a steady source of income and a fair credit history. A friend of mine had credit scores in the mid 500’s and they still gave her credit; her down payment was $20. Carmax has much better inventory than the "guaranteed credit car dealership."

What do they do with the cars that don’t get sold in car dealerships?

I’m talkni’ about the new cars. Well.. I always see a lotta new cars in car dealerships, and I am pretty sure not all of them gets sold. So.. if they don’t get sold, and they get somewhat outdated, what do they do with the cars?

New cars that don’t get sold because newer models are out are eventually sold by the dealership. New cars usually come out in the fall so dealerships usually get anxious about the unsold cars in their lot. They never are sold as used because they are new and untitled. The dealership may have to sell the older models just a few bucks above dealer invoice or just below dealer invoice. But in the end, the dealer gets the money back selling you extended warranty and other useless add ons. You are still buying a new car by any means. You just have to remember that it’s a year or two older so depreciation will be so much. Some of them gets shipped to other dealerships that maybe looking for those cars for customers wanting to buy ‘em. So bottomline, dealerships make the money from the customers whether or not the model is an older one or a totally brand new model.

no they dont have to,

any reasonable dealer should get you one if you request it, many just shell out the cash ahead of time and get them on all their cars as soon as they come in.

tell them you wont buy the car without it, if they still wont get you one then go someplace that will
